Christian Statesmen

Hello, this is my first attempt at blogging, but with the help of my son and son-in-law I hope that this might be of benefit to you. Certainly this will not be a place where you will find "deep spiritual truth", but I do want to share with you some of the things that God is teaching me and some of the things that I am hearing from other folks.

My work with Church Stewardship Development allows me the opportunity to work with many different Brothers and Sisters in Christ. Let me share with you about a very special "Brother” I met this week. God has led me to work with CrossPointe Church in Pampa, Texas. We hosted an event entitled: "What's Cookin' at CrossPointe" along with Texas Representative Warren Chisum. I have met Rep. Chisum on a number of occasions, and as I prepared my introduction for Mr. Chisum, I found an article that described his stance on many issues. The newspaper in Austin (a very liberal paper) interviewed Mr. Chisum and asked what he believed about the Bible. His reply was that it is the very word of God and it is without error. He also stated that it should be interpreted literally.

He also has wonderful ideas on the family. When we had breakfast he described how he hopes to highly encourage every couple that wants to be married in Texas to attend pre-marital counseling classes (he has recommended a series by Gary Smalley). He was told he couldn't force couples to attend counseling, but he found that he could offer a discount for state marriage licenses to those who attend counseling ($50 for those who attend counseling - $300 for those who don't). He also stands strongly against same sex marriages. This man is one that makes you feel good about those who are in public service. While many disagree with him, he has been kind to his critics and they respect him. In the article that spoke of his Christian commitment, he was called the second most powerful man in Texas politics (Chairman of the Appropriations Committee). During this political season it is important that we pray and ask God to give wisdom to those who represent us.
